The examination is performed due to doctor’s orders. It lasts 24 hours.
Preparations for the examination:
It is necessary to have a chest shaven before the test.
Description of the Holter examination:
After preparing your skin (shaving chest and cleaning it with alcohol or petroleum), the electrodes are stuck. Then, they are joined with certain wires to the monitor recording ECG. This device is usually attached to a belt, which enables moving freely. Each device has an “EVENT” button, which is to signal any abnormalities occurring during the test. Patients are obliged to keep diaries of what activities they do while wearing the monitor, and hours of any abnormal symptoms if happened. During device placement, patients are informed when they should come to have it taken off. While wearing the monitor, patients must not take a bath or a shower, cannot use electric blankets and pillows and must not manipulate in the device. The test findings are given in a form of description with records attached (records of a heart’s electrical activity in a certain time).
What should be reported to your doctor during the examination?
- Any technical problems connected with wearing Holter monitor (e.g. when the electrodes fall off).
- Any abnormal symptoms during the examination with information if the “EVENT” button was pressed.
